Mission Statement

The Department of Anthropology sees as its role and mission the systematic and scientific study of the human species.  As such, it is central within the Social Sciences and contributory to the Humanities and the biological sciences.  Administratively the department fulfills part of the State Board of Education's mandated emphasis area in Social Sciences and Public Affairs.  Professionally the faculty are committed to teaching, research, and service to the University, the community, and the State of Idaho.  And educationally the faculty are committed to providing students with: 1) an understanding of anthropological perspectives as a basis for making reasoned assessments of cross-cultural differences; 2) an appreciation of cultural variability as a means of understanding one's own behavior; 3) an appreciation of a holistic perspective for understanding ourselves and others, past and present.  To facilitate the faculty's ability to perform their role and carry out the mission of the department, original research relating to these issues is encouraged. Outreach into the community that involves the communication and application of the insights that these studies have provided is supported.
